The buds of this thick and widely branched bush are the source of Gemmotherapy Extract Blackthorn. Native to Europe and the Caucasus, it is one of our most common shrubs. By extending through the vigorous suckering of its tracing roots, the blackthorn manages to form very thorny impenetrable thickets that provide the birds with an ideal nesting haven. Blackthorn prefers moist, well-drained soil, light, and is commonly found with other shrub species of the Genera Rosa, Rubus, Prunus and Cornus, at the edge of oak and beech forests or on river banks with willows and poplars. Typical rustic plant of temperate zones, it can reach 9 feet (3 meters) in height and is very resistant to infestations and regenerates quickly.

Blackthorns announce spring with an explosion of white flowers that envelop the plant even before the leaves arrive.

In the popular tradition, the blackthorn was very appreciated as a coloring plant (red for the bark and black for the fruits) and in popular medicine, the bark was used in decoction as a febrifuge and astringent, while the infusion of the leaves was prescribed for astringent gargling. the fruits, very astringent, have anti-diarrheal properties.
