The buds of this fast-growing tree are used to prepare the Gemmotherapy Extract. Common Alder is present in most of the northern hemisphere. Found along river banks, lakeshores and in marshy locations, it requires a high availability of water to thrive. It can be found on a wide range of soil types if the moisture is adequate. It is often found together with ash (Fraxinus spp.), birch (Betula spp.), willow (Salix spp.) or oak (Quercus spp.). Its roots fix atmospheric nitrogen thanks to bacteria present in nodules. It is a pioneer tree and colonizer of the periodically flooded alluviums which affectionates the sunny zones. It can also be used as a nurse species to improve the growth of neighboring plants. Its wood, placed definitively in the water, becomes almost indestructible and was used to build the immersed foundations of buildings in Venice.

In the Anglo-Saxon and Danish tradition, Common Alder is synonymous with elf. It raises the dead and transports them into the world of air. The buds of this tree will be useful during each great passage of life.

Latin authors cite Common Alder only for its wood and it is in the Middle Ages that the first medicinal indications appear. The fresh leaves are recommended for external use to extinguish inflammation, as well as for their antigalactogenic, sudorific and healing properties. The bark was used for its astringent and febrifuge virtues.
