Gemmotherapy extracts are prepared with the buds of this 120 feet (40 meters) tall tree, living in all types of soil and in a humid environment. Shadow tree, the Beech tree hates bright sunshine and dry weather. Its presence indicates forest degradation. Its roots spread out more or less horizontally at a short distance from the soil surface. Beech grows too fast, too high without sufficiently rooting. The Beech symbolizes righteousness with clay feet. Its buds are characteristic, very long and sharp. Its fruits, once among the most sought-after wild fruits, provide a very delicate oil with a long shelf life (up to 10 years), which has fallen into disuse nowadays. The first therapeutic use of beech goes back to Matthiole who, in 1566, recommended its leaves to be chewed against gum diseases. In the XVIIIth century, leaves were used topically as a gargle for mouth and throat affections. The decoction was used against diarrhea. The charcoal obtained from the wood was used for its antacid properties and to absorb gas and intestinal toxins.
