Grey Alder is a tree or shrub that provides its bud for the preparation of gemmotherapy extract. Smaller than Common Alder, the name incana comes from the Latin word incanus meaning grayish, referring to the color of its bark. Native to most of central Europe, it can be found across the Northern Hemisphere, extending westwards towards France and east into Russia, the Caucasus and western Siberia, Grey Alder can be found in wet woods, swampy woods, and mountain riparian areas up to 5000 feet (1700 meters). It is a pioneer tree in the reforestation of bare soil, enriching it thanks to its roots that can fix nitrogen, and preparing it to make it suitable to host other more demanding plant species later. Grey Alder is not a long-lived tree, being able to live only 50 – 100 years.
