Sweet Chestnut (Tree Bud Extract), Castanea vesca

1.7fl oz (50 ml)

Sweet Chestnut’s primary action is as a tonic for the lymphatic system, particularly the lower torso but includes lungs. Its secondary action, as a consequence of the resolution of congested lymph, is improved vascular circulation and vein health. It also serves as a general detoxifier. Indirectly, improved lymph movement and circulation optimize respiratory functions.

The buds of this monumental tree are the source of Sweet Chestnut Gemmotherapy Extract. Originally from Iran, the Chestnut tree arrived in Italy 2500 years ago and the Romans then spread it throughout Europe. It is currently spread over a very large territory. It is a majestic tree that can reach exceptional dimensions. A Chestnut tree more than 3000 years old still lives in Sicily, at the foot of Mount Etna, measuring 66 feet (22 meters) high and although its trunk is now empty, it reached 180 feet (56 meters) in 1872.

The Chestnut tree usually needs deep, fresh, acid and siliceous soils, rich in mineral salts but poor in limestone. It displays a high sensitivity to summer droughts issuing from the combination of high temperatures and lack of precipitation. Its root system is deep and very widespread capitalizing on all available space. Its fruits are grouped (1 to 3) in a very thorny envelope, the bug.

Highly nutritive, for centuries they have been a fundamental part of the diet, either as such or in the form of flour.

In folk medicine, the use of decoctions of the leaves and flowers is reported to treat coughs. The dried fruits are consumed as intestinal astringents.”
