The buds of this large majestic and solitary tree are the source of Walnut Gemmotherapy Extract. The tree can reach 75 to 90 feet (25 to 30 meters) in height and 400 years old. The walnut tree is probably native to Western Asia but has spread, naturalized, and been cultivated throughout Europe since ancient times. Walnut loves deep, rich soils with mobile soles that are well-drained, calcareous and fertile. It lives isolated and in the open because it cannot grow in a forest. Therefore, it demands free and open spaces. It bears the cold well but it looks for warmth because excessive frost can destroy the flower buds, catkins, and any future fruit.

Nothing grows under the Walnut tree because it is rich in juglone, a toxic substance for other plants in the surroundings; this is the way Walnut defends its territory. Its roots first go down vertically in-depth (rooting phase), then they spread out horizontally (territory delimitation phase) and finally they go up, sometimes even to the surface (superficial communication phase). The fruits, the nuts, have a twisted and curious shape, so much so that in signature theory (Paracelse) the nut symbolizes the brain. Walnuts are very nutritious, they contain 50 to 60% fat with a balance of omegas 3, 6 and 9 close to perfection, as well as a significant amount of protein and vitamins.

Historically, the populations of the Paleolithic already harvested its fruits, the ancient Greeks and Romans knew the Walnut tree but the nuts were not very appreciated by Dioscorides. St. Hildegard of Bingen (12th century) used the bark against worms, the nut against poisoning, liver abscesses, skin disorders, worms, and the shell of the fruit against tearing. And finally, the leaves against worms, gout, and leprosy.

Among the Celts, the Walnut tree gave the passion to ensure and defend its joy of living.
