This evergreen shrub provides its young shoots for the preparation of the Wild Privet Gemmotherapy Extract. A shrub that can reach 9 feet (3 meters), the Wild Privet has fine, shallow rhizomatous roots, highly invasive, crowding out all other plants. Native to Europe and western Asian regions, it is widespread in much of Europe and has naturalized in North America as well. Wild Privet grows in thermophilic open and deciduous woodlands, in hedgerows, and at the edge of woods and forests. It prefers calcareous soils even if very dry, light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils with various pH even very alkaline. Its dark green glossy leaves are deciduous in colder environments while in temperate areas they can be persistent. The milky-white flowers gathered in dense upright terminal panicles give off an intense fragrance. The fruits are small purgative and toxic blackberries, their excessive ingestion causes serious intoxication.
Popular medicine has used infusions and decoctions of leaves for their anti-diarrheal and intestinal astringent properties, or in gargling in cases of mouth disorders. Flower maceration oil has been used for centuries in friction against pain and cellulite.
